Sam was suffering from untreated erlichiosis, a tick disease, and a nasty ear infection which had caused him to run a slight fever. Thanks to Dr. Bailey at Rustburg Veterinary Clinic for suggesting the two-week “ear-packing” treatment for Sam, and for getting him set up with one month of doxycycline for treatment of the tick disease. Apparently, Sam had not received tbe full course of meds two years ago when he was treated for Lyme and erlichia. We know from experience that the full course of doxy is what works! Sam was drastically underweight at 63.9 pounds.

We look forward to helping him recover and find a loving, responsible family! *********  Sam appears to be good with livestock, according to the family who surrendered him, but we don’t know about chickens, or other small furrys. We think Sam would be happy as a couch potato! We will share more as we get to know him better.

Update: Sam gets along great with other dogs, regardless of size. He appreciates a calm demeanor such as his.  I will test him with cats soon, but he is so calm, I cannot see any harm in him. He is very apprehensive about the use of steps, therefor, I have been unable to get him into my home. I do know he is probably 'house trained' due to the fact he would not and will not eliminate in his dog lot area. We move him from his lot to the yard.  I have found he likes a routine and is quite content.

He does not walk well on a leash, or he will not walk well on the leash to go somewhere he doesn't want to go. He will lay down and not move for a period of time.  We are now requiring a fence because he wants to bolt (while on the leash) sometimes.
