UPDATE July 15: Handsome Homer is ready to be adopted! His foster mom gave us a wonderful update about his progress, and we'll try to share it here: He is playful. Yes, he is great when he plays on his own with toys that he can grab in his mouth and swing around, but he is also good when he plays with other dog-savvy dogs. Because he has so much love to give, we think he'd be a pretty amazing dog for a dog-savvy owner to have even without other dogs around. He still on occasion lets his housetraining and crate training skills be lax, and he still needs reminders to let mom pick up the poop. (Yes, we think it's important that prospective adopters know the good, the bad, and the ugly about fostered dogs!)

Foster mom says he loves the woods and the water, and adores time in their kayaks! He wears a life vest and doesn't mind getting soaked. An active young family would be absolutely perfect for him. And here's more: he walks without pulling! For an active young boy, that's pretty amazing! He loves greeting other dogs, and will sit and quiver as he waits to make friends. He plays rough with cats, however, and probably cats would be happier if they weren't forced to live in the same household. Have we piqued your interest? We hope so!

Updated on June 5: Homer is growing his coat! He has a pretty golden glow about him now. His foster mom is still diligently keeping up with his bathing and medication, and takes him to work with her daily. He had the opportunity to go camping over the Memorial Day weekend, and he had so much fun! He was not a huge fan of the cold water, but he did wear his life jacket to keep him afloat if needed, and the experience was good for him!

Original post: Homer (first named TOBY, but changed by his foster family) is a "project dog:" For the next few months, he will be bathed daily, medicated twice daily, and socialized and loved like he has never known. Homer Toby suffers from untreated skin infections, and has probably been like this since he was born. Demodectic mange is not contagious, but can flare up when the body's immune system has been compromised. Complicating the mange infection is bacterial infection AND a yeast infection. Poor baby! What a blessing for him to be found and brought in to animal control! And what a blessing for FOAC that there are so many people who are willing to help him through donations for his care, and an offer to foster him. We can't wait to see what the future holds for him!
