About Spot, the Big Boy

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black
  • Housetrained: Yes
Spot is a happy one year old who came to us from his family, who raised Spot and a sibling from birth. There were small children in his birth family, so Spot learned to be polite and respectful to children, and he remains polite even now. Spot is making progress with socialization and training in his new foster home! His foster mom is enjoying his new discoveries every day., B. Spot is over 90 pounds, but doesn't seem really massive--it's more that he has very long legs that go on forever! He loves to play and a large soccer ball is his favorite! He's been enjoying soccer games inside a fenced yard, and it would be great if that could be his next home .. . a physical fence, of course, and not an invisible fence. He is a cuddler when he is inside, and he has the added bonus of being very comfortable in a crate with a soft blanket to lay on. His foster mom wrote up some great notes, and I want to share them here. " He was born into a loving home with small children and grew to be protective of them. His owner surrendered him to a foster home when he & his brother grew large & started arguing over a female canine in the household. In Spot’s puppyhood home, each dog had some family time while the others stayed in their crates, so he has learned to remain quietly in his crate without complaining when other dogs are loose in the house. Spot is neutered, up to date on his immunizations & is HW negative. Spot is not a picky eater but is currently on a grain-free diet to promote heathy skin /coat and boost his immune system. He is full grown at 95+lb but he is still filling out his lanky frame. Spot will need to be an indoor dog as his coat is very short. Spot is an eager learner, picking up on almost any command quickly and he remembers them: wait, go out, heel, sit. He walks well on a leash & pulls only when he forgets that it’s not allowed. He is housetrained & sleeps by the handler’s bed through the night without a peep, even when she sleeps late. He not a chewer of household items if he has a chew toy. Although Spot is mature for a one year old, he suffers from lack of exposure to the outside world so he is insecure & fearful of new sights & sounds. He needs an owner who has time to take him places, encourage new adventures & hone his acute intelligence. Even though this breed is quite large, Spot is easy to manage, being ever friendly & obedient to his handler. He is patient with pedicures & allows ear cleaning after some encouragement. Loves to fetch but prefers bringing the ball back to his handler rather than chewing on it by himself. He loves running and charging his handler but has learned not to jump on people. His bonvivant is checked by his need for direction and he happily cedes the alpha role to his handler. Shows no signs of a prey drive, hardly noticing squirrels in the yard, and displays little, if any, interest in small neighbor dogs. He is a good guard dog but keeps his distance when a stranger approaches, refusing to be befriended. With time and love and a consistent handler, he will shed the fears of puppyhood & acquire the self confident air that is the big dog’s birthright." This dog is in a foster home and not at the Campbell County Animal Control Facility.
