Great Dane / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat) : : Female : : Young : : X-Large Learn more about the Great Dane. Learn more about the Labrador Retriever.
Looking for the dog who has special attributes that offset the puppy qualities that drive us crazy? In other words, the perfect rescue dog ever? You probably need to find out more about JUNO, then, as she is a great mix of both good and trying! She is currently living with folks who adopted her from a local humane society, and she did well initially with the other dogs in the household. Now that she has finished high school and is ready to start college, Juno has decided she is the boss of everyone and has become obnoxious with the other dogs in the home. (True teenager, right?) She could be a large bully breed mix, but was originally thought to be a mastiff mix. It's so hard to tell when they are babies! Her current mom wrote a wonderful story about her. Read on:
"If Juno were to have a full time job it would definitely have to be Security Guard or Bouncer. :) She is very protective, and will chase any unwanted person right out of the house. But then CEO would fit her too because she's intelligent, loyal and likes to be in charge. On the plus side, she's housebroken, but on the downside, if she's left alone in the house she will eat anything she can get into her mouth. She even ate one of our baseboards one day when I was taking a shower. She's particularly fond of DirecTv remotes (she's eaten 3) and slippers (she's eaten every pair I've bought), and we still haven't been able to break her of her habit of jumping on you. She's still learning how to walk properly on the leash, but she gets better every time she goes for a walk. She can also sit, stay and shake. Juno really needs to be adopted by a family that has no other pets. She's sweet and loving but she wants to be the center of attention, and she'll push the other dogs out of the way to be the center of attention. She ALWAYS wants to be with her humans, and she always wants to sleep touching you. Juno is a wonderful awesome dog, and will make an excellent pet, but I really want to make sure that any possible new owners understand her less than desirable traits. I would hate for her to get traded around from home to home because the owners don't understand what they're taking on. In fact, if you do adopt her and decide to return her, we would be happy to take her back. It's a pain to keep our girls and our boys constantly separated, but we are willing to keep doing it if the perfect home isn't out there for her. Juno's biggest flaw is that she can be aggressive. She growls when meeting new people for the first time inside the house. First meetings would be best outside the house, and treats are necessary to calm her down. She's very protective and she doesn't like strangers coming into the house. In fact, that's how our problems began with Juno and our boy dogs. Juno can also be very reactive toward other dogs, both out on walks and in the home. She barks at them, sometimes very assertively, but she has been given limited exposure to other dogs. She is making progress on walks by beginning to focus on the human leading her rather than distractions, but she can still be distracted by dogs and cars.
So, after speaking with a dog trainer experienced with dogs who have these issues, we are thinking Juno would love to be an only dog, and would HIGHLY benefit from a series of training sessions with a local trainer who has worked hard with reactive dogs. (We have her information on file and will send it on to you, if you decide to adopt!)
