7/30/14: Transferred to Lab Rescue of Greater Richmond. Sweet Baby Ray needs a forever home. Due to changes in his foster mom's life, he is now on URGENT status for us. We've not pushed hard before, because he fit in so well with his momma and the other critters, but time is now of the essence. Here is what we can tell you about this gorgeous six year old black lab: From his foster mom: "RAY is pretty easy-going during the day, until one of two important events occur in his day: the first one, feeding time, sends him into ecstasy! When I am getting ready to feed him and the rest of the dogs, he gets excited and barks just like the rest of the gang here. Once he eats, he goes straight to the door to go out. When he has finished his business, he scratches at the door to come back in. Ray is very laid back and just hangs out in his chair or on the sofa for the most part. However, when he sees my adult sons coming to visit, he goes nuts when he sees them pull in the yard and barks like crazy until they enter. He does not jump on them, but he is the first person to meet them when they come through the door. They really are not allowed to speak to me until they have spoken to Ray and petted him. My guess is he used to belong to a young male......I'm okay in Ray's book, but my adult sons rate far higher than me! We have let him out off leash and not in the fenced in area. Most of the time he just follows us around the yard, finds a stick and lays down to chew on it. Several weeks ago, he did discover a stray cat under the wood pile and chased it 1/2 mile down in the woods and was not interested in coming back when we called him. This was a first for us since Ray had been here, so needless to say he has not been outside off leash since his "walk-about"....(My oldest son was here and luckily was able to gather him up from the woods.) Ray is excellent with the other five dogs here and two cats. He pays absolutely no attention to the cats. Ray does not steal food from the other dogs when eating. He has been known to counter surf and help himself to cakes, breads and such, if he chooses. I feel he probably would bark at wildlife, but I honestly don't know if he would sense/smell them and chase after them. My gut tells me no, but I would not guarantee this. Ray is completely house trained and has never had an accident. He does not bother items in the house that are just sitting around, other than the countersurfing at times. He sleeps on his chair, dog bed or the sofa.....He does not seem to be interested in sleeping in the bed with me (many of the other dogs do sleep with me) nor does he follow us to the bedroom when I go to bed. Ray LOVES to ride and is elated when he is invited to do a ride-along! Because he is now eating a decent diet, his weight is a nice 76 pounds, down from the obese 107 he weighed when he was first found abandoned at the pound. Oh, he does have two quirks. He does not like to have his tail or feet touched. He does not bite, but he does nudge you strongly to let you know that he does not like it." So now you know the rest of the story, and more! Do you want to take this super boy into your home? He needs you, and now! This dog is in a foster home and not at the Campbell County Animal Control Facility. We always begin with an application to adopt, and this will be forwarded to the foster family for review. You can find this on our website, www.friendsofcampbellcounty.org.
