Cooper came in as an injured stray from Elliott Rd. He is quite frightened at the shelter and we hope to get to know him better in the next few days.
UPDATE 6/5/14: Cooper got a quick visit to the vet yesterday to see what was happening with his wounds. He apparently was NOT hit by a car, but more likely was attacked by another dog. And since he has had a collar on recently, we speculate that he was tied out when it occurred, and couldn't get away. The wound on his hip is deep and is infected; it needs warm compresses twice daily, but it really hurts him to have us touching it. The vet wished she could put in a drain, but since he is still on stray hold with no where else to go, we do only urgent care and hold off on anything else. He is willing to take his meds orally, likes to go out for walks, and hopefully will feel much better very soon!
UPDATE 6/6/14: After 24 hours on antibiotics and pain meds, Cooper has beat the fever and is fighting his infection, and he is looking good now! We can pull the ticks off, rough up his ears, and he loves it rather than screaming in pain. The vet feels he was attacked by another dog, due to the number of puncture wounds on his chest, plus the injury to his rear. He wags his stubby tail now, and he will be there to greet you as you enter the dog runs. Be sure to stop by to say "hi!" to him, as he is in run 1!
The policy for adopting an unsterilized pet requires that you live in Campbell County, Lynchburg City, or a county touching Campbell County. If you are a resident of one of these areas, you may adopt directly from the facility and spay/neuter the pet yourself within 30 days, or by the time the pet is six months of age. If you live outside this area, the pet must be spayed or neutered before you can take it home. Kittens or puppies too young for spay/neuter may be adopted through Friends of Campbell County Animal Control. We will be happy to help you make arrangements to do this.
