KitKat is a four year old beagle mix. She should be about the size of a beagle but unfortunately, lack of exercise in her kennel living situation has led to the need for a weight reduction program. KitKat is very intelligent and highly food motivated. Although she had little socialization as a youngster, she has learned sit and stay very quickly. She now walks politely on a leash. KitKat does need a strong leader, in that she needs to know that she is safe with her person and protected. . KitKat loves attention and will misbehave to get it, an unfortunate habit she learned early on. She is now learning that she gets more attention for good behavior than bad. Her worst habit is jumping up, but as soon as she knows you will not tolerate it, she stops. She has really progressed to the point that she needs to transition from a kennel-style life to that of a in-home dog. ADOPTION GUIDELINES: Virginia’s Code requires that any unsterilized pets adopted from the Campbell County Animal Shelter may be adopted only to residents of Campbell County, the City of Lynchburg, or counties touching Campbell County. If you are a resident of one of these areas, you may adopt directly from the facility and have the pet spayed/neutered within 30 days, or by the time the pet is six months of age. If you live outside this area, the pet must be spayed or neutered before you can take it home. Puppies or kittens in care at the shelter too young to be spayed/neutered before adoption may often be adopted through Friends of Campbell County Animal Control. There is an adoption fee required for this process. We ask that you have a veterinarian on record who can verify that your other pets were well-cared for. Pets identified as being “fostered” are available for a fee. Fees range from $50 to $300. Fostered pets are not at the Campbell County Shelter and the animal wardens may not be familiar with those pets. An Adoption Application, available at the Campbell County Shelter, or online at our website www.friendsofcampbellcounty.org, is required prior to adoption. Specific questions are most easily answered by email, info@friendsofcampbellcounty.org, or by leaving a voicemail for one of our volunteers at 434-485-6242.
