Louie is a ten-month old Catahoula Leopard dog brought to the shelter last week. The animal control officer was told that at his apartment complex when he was out walking, he growled at a stranger and his human was asked to find him another home. It is very sad that so many dogs at this age are greatly misunderstood. They need confidence-building as they mature. This is the typical age for dogs to go through a “fear period” of emotional development, and is one reason we encourage dog training with a professional to help owners understand what their dog is going through. This is not a bad dog. He is a bit reactive to new situations, a bit distrustful, and needs work with rewards and positive reinforcement to feel good about strangers and new situations. A shelter is the worst place to give this boy what he needs—but we will give it our best shot. The best situation for him would be a home and a commitment to training with a professional to help him learn that strangers can be good, and that reactivity can be helped. He seems to be very interested in other dogs, and as a dog bred for hunting, he is overly interested in prey. In the right home, he will be absolutely delightful! We recommend open spaces for him to get some of his energy expended, enrichment activities, problem-solving, but mostly lots of one-on-one training. Interested people would apply to adopt by going to our website, and filling out this application. At this time, we are unable to prove any vet care so we’ll have to start from scratch. https://friendsofcampbellcounty.rescuegroups.org/forms/form?formid=3709
