“Little Miss Missy” foster dog stopped in to visit us at the shelter on Thursday, one of the craziest days of the week! Missy is not receptive to lots of changes or new things, and will require a home with consistency, patience, no children, and probably no cats from what we can see now. She has been in foster care for two months and has learned to trust her foster caregiver. Two months ago when we tried to touch her, she was nippy and bitey, and now she has learned to allow her foster dad to pick her up as long as he gives her warning and moves slowly. That is huge for a little dog with trust issues! Missy is between one and two years old, and is now spayed, current with vaccines, micro chipped, and as you can see, she was beautifully groomed quite recently, and did beautifully at the groomers. In fact, she probably behaved better there than she does in her normal home setting. We are very pleased that she is making progress, but realize she is not going to be an easy placement; someone who is expecting a fun, cuddly small dog is not necessarily going to want nippy as part of the package! Her foster dad says that she has her own bed to sleep in, but now will also hop up into his recliner with him when she is ready, and is willing to receive attention in her own time. she would love to have a fenced yard, and it was sure, make walking her much easier as you would not have to worry about leaning over and attaching a leash to her collar, and perhaps worrying her as you did so. if you’re up to the challenge, don’t feel like you must have a snuggly, cuddly companion from the get-go, but are willing to work for it, this might be a good choice for you. We do start with an application, so look on our website for Little Miss Missy as you choose the dog for which you want to apply. Update on Missy: Missy visited the vet office on Wednesday for a full exam, and a quick groom. We were afraid she might need to be sedated due to her reluctance to be handled, but we understand that was not necessary, and she made it through her entire exam without any loss of human fingers or dog flesh. She has been prescribed an antibiotic to take to clear up her skin infection due to hair loss from a supposed flea allergy. She is looking pretty good now. Her coat is coming back in. We are recommending another week or two in foster care before we decide where she should be placed. Her foster dad is giving her plenty of time. She does not like to be picked up, and will try to bite. However, she is doing much better in the handling category as far as allowing, touching on her face, ears, and even her belly. Definitely, no small children for her, but she is good with other dogs and even good with cats. We feel she needs a quiet home with lots of consistency, someone who will not be in and out frequently, or have lots of strangers entering the house. We look forward to finding out more about her as the days pass.
