UPDATE: Orion enjoyed visiting new friends at Rustburg Veterinary Hospital today, where he was loved, admired, poked, and prodded—and with very little resistance on his part. The consensus is that this beautiful boy that arrived with no background information regarding his health, living conditions, or family, deserves a chance to be adopted and allowed to have the best life he can as long as he feels good. You are probably thinking, “Every cat and dog deserves a chance to have a long adoptive life!” So why are we making special note of Orion’s hopes for adoption? It’s because his exam today revealed something no one wants to hear—the horrible, dreaded “C” word, the one that gives you a knot in your stomach, and the one that gives volunteers who love every cat in our care cause for sadness and desperation: cancer. The lump on his chin was aspirated in hopes it was a fatty cyst, so finding it is not was devastating. Orion is an outgoing and happy boy who came to us after being found. All we want is for someone to give him a home where he can have a life outside the shelter, enjoy life until the cancer gives him trouble, and then decide what is best for the boy. At nearly 13 pounds, six weeks in a cat cage has already been less than fulfilling. Are you willing to give him time to be happy? Seven years old, appreciative personality, all he needs is time. Please help him find it! Apply here: www.friendsofcampbellcounty.org

About seven years old, was brought to us as a stray a couple weeks ago. The first thing I noticed about Orion was that he was loaded with fleas and his skin was scabby from the infection from the flea bites. After treating the fleas his skin feels so much better! But we still noted that he was having issues with his tail. It was as though there was no feeling in it, and we were also concerned about his drooling behavior. A quick visit to the vet office on Thursday yielded some important information. In addition to missing a tooth, Orion has a hard lump in his lower jaw, and we do not know if it is a broken off tooth root with an abscess that has formed, or is it something more worrisome such as a tumor. The only way to tell would be through a dental x-ray. That is something requiring a referral to a vet office with special equipment. We are hoping to find a sponsor so we can move on with this, and find out what is going on with this beautiful for a baby. There is still no answer as to what is wrong with his tail. Was it caught in the trap when he was trapped before coming in? Is it an old injury that will never get better? When a cat is in a cat cage at the shelter, it is difficult for us to observe behavior adequately, so we are glad we had the opportunity to see Orion being loved and handled by the vet techs and the veterinarian at Seven Hills animal hospital. Orion is back at the shelter now, waiting for the next step in our plans. He has been tested for FLVFIV, and is already neutered. We would love for him to find a home regardless of what we find out about his jaw, and will waive his adoption fee to an approved adopter. Apply here: www.friendsofcampbellcounty.org.
