Two year old COPPER was brought in by his adopters of 14 months. We always ask that people return their adopted pets to either FOAC or to the shelter for rehoming, if the adoption does not work out. Despite consulting a behaviorist for help, the family was unable to help Copper make the necessary progress they felt was adequate for him to be a successful family member at their home. While I would not term Copper a project dog like many, Copper does have special needs that should be considered. He is fully vetted, vaccinated to date, neutered, microchipped, and is a healthy boy. He is house trained, good with other dogs, and adores humans. His adopter told us he prefers women to men, and barks at men when he sees them.
At the shelter, we are not seeing that right now because he just came back to us, but we often see dogs who prefer one sex over another, and we also often see families who do not want to deal with the preferences their dog shows. We will recommend the next home be a family where there is either a male in the household who is willing to toss treats and feed this dog to earn his trust, or a female-only household. Let’s face it, every dog comes with a quirk of some kind! It’s all about finding the same kind of quirky people to accept that dog for who he is!
If you are willing to consult a behaviorist or trainer which we can recommend to you, we would love to have you consider taking home this handsome boy! He is at the shelter for now but we would sure love to have him in a foster home where he can develop confidence and be happy.
