Update:

BooBoo is an eleven-year-old senior looking for his forever home. We discovered BooBoo was FIV+ when he was surrendered to the shelter in March.  Similar to HIV in humans, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) causes a weakening of the immune system. There are no specific signs of FIV, but since FIV-positive cats have a weaker immune system,  they are more prone to getting infections like dental disease. This was the case with BooBoo, who had major dental work done to remove nearly all his teeth. This hasn't slowed his appetite and he can eat wet and dry food with no problem, despite having only four canines left.

BooBoo is a very sweet senior who adores attention from people. If he so much as sees a person coming toward him, he will begin purring so loudly! He loves sleeping in his cat tree and looking out the window. Unfortunately, he is very stressed out in his foster home where there are many other cats and kittens. This has led to extreme shedding and hair loss and problems using the litterbox. When confined and away from the other cats in his foster home, he does not exhibit any of these behaviors and uses his litter box and scratching post wonderfully. Considering how much BooBoo loves people and getting attention, his foster mom hates locking him up on his own and is hoping someone has it in his heart to give this old man a place to live out his days.

Original post: Sweet Boo Boo was brought to the shelter by his person when the family was told NO PETS were allowed. BooBoo is FIV positive.  We know that FIV positive cats can live long, happy lives if they are cared for properly, but unfortunately, BooBoo's health is a mess. In addition to stage 4 dental disease, requiring most of his teeth to be extracted, BooBoo also has advanced heart disease, and a significant (grade 4) heart murmur. We struggled to make the best decision for him and when his foster mom offered to keep him as long as he was not suffering a a hospice foster, we knew we had to give him a chance. BooBoo is the most gentle, loving, and adaptable cat you can imagine! His first night in foster care, he crawled into bed with his foster mom and snuggled up against her, with his purring engine turned on full-throttle, as if she had always been his one and only.  We were so inspired by his love and trust for total strangers, we looked into options for emergency dental surgery. With pandemic issues still affecting surgery schedules, we were in despair we would be able to get something arranged quickly. Blessings to our friends at VCA Boonsboro Animal Hospital for re-arranging and squeezing and scheduling BooBoo for surgery on Friday, March 19. We are so fortunate!  Not everyone is comfortable with FIV positive cats living in a group setting with "healthy" cats, but it seems that FIV, the cat version of human AIDS, is spread through biting. Please watch his progress as he heads into surgery next week to save his life! Interested in adopting? He is great with other cats!
