UPDATE:

It’s not often that we get dogs who are this accepting of cats, but CHESNEY is one who really doesn’t care! One cat? Two or three? He is cool with that! What he does have issues with, however, is interacting with humans. Chesney had been caught in a humane trap several months ago, and after three weeks in a foster home has shown great progress with socialization and house “knowledge.”
Sadly, little man Chesney was brought back to the shelter because he wasn’t progressing quite fast enough for his foster mom, whose own dog didn’t interact with Chesney: we are sad but we understand. We want Chesney to get out of the shelter and back into a home so he can continue his progress.
Here is what he needs: another sweet dog who can model for him; a less-busy household with a patient family; and TIME. Chesney is not a lovable dog who enjoys cuddling or even being petted. He just likes having a friend around to take care of him and allow him to learn to trust. He is being treated for a slight heartworm positive condition, that is non-invasive and it’s not affecting his behavior in anyway. It’s important that this continue for the next year until his next heartworm test. To apply to adopt go here: Friendsofcampbellcounty.org.

Update: it has been several weeks since we updated Chesney‘s progress. He is more willing to be touched now, but still isn’t sure that it is a good thing. Chesney has established a relationship with one or two of our volunteers and will now come to them when they call him to come inside. We still leave his leash attached to him so that he can be easily handled after playtime in the play yard. He has had the opportunity to play with several dogs of many sizes, and has appropriate social skills. We think he is very special!

*******

We were so excited to find that Chesney is open to being befriended, and would like to be a good companion, but we know it will take some time to completely earn his trust, and for him to feel comfortable with us. From a shy boy, trapped in a humane trap in one of the towns in our county, to a little guy willing to let volunteers hook him up on his leash and take him for walks, to taking meds for the deadly heartworm disease that was just diagnosed... what a tangled life for this little man! We'd love to find a home for him with someone willing to be patient and not need an outpouring of love in return for what they give to him. Dogs like this come to us infrequently and we have had good luck rehabbing them and helping them to be lovable and love us in return. His size is easy to work with and his willingness to try is there. Are you someone willing to try as well?  We plan to have him neutered, but were saddened to discover his heartworm-positive status this week. We're already doing the preliminary antibiotic for one month, and plan to continue his treatments, to help him find a home.
