Anatolian Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat) : : Male : : Young : : Large Learn more about the Anatolian Shepherd.
When you think of an Anatolian Shepherd, most likely you get the image of a confident guardian breed, who is ready to take on the world, and be a buddy to humans while protecting a flock. Hoss dreams of being confident, but is not at that point in his life yet, due to a rocky unsocialized puppyhood. He took a backseat to his sister until a month ago, depending on her to assess the situation, and be the bold obnoxious puppy of the two of them. She enjoyed correcting him if she felt he needed it, and that added to his lack of confidence. Now that she has found a home, Hoss is on his own, and it's not as easy as he had hoped. Here is what we see: Hoss is soft, sweet and wanting to know love, but the human who adopts him will need to earn his love and respect. He is apprehensive of anything new, from people to his environment. His road to independence is currently being guided by a trainer, who is helping him become confident through several different behavioral exercises. His foster mom is rewarding Hoss for coming to her for attention. For a dog that is not food-motivated, this is not easy, but for now, he responds well to verbal praise, and is learning to enjoy treats. When Hoss checks out the unknown, and again looks to mom for reassurance, he is rewarded. For him, life is going to be a series of trials and rewards. His adopter is not going to be getting a dog that is ready to tackle the world, but rather, a dog who lacks the basic social skills and comfort level of a well-socialized dog. If you want to adopt, we want to know that you have a trainer lined up and ready to help you with this project. We will consider only those adopters willing to pursue positive-reinforcement type training, and can recommend area trainers if you need a consult. We know Hoss will blossom if he in the right home, but we are taking our time finding that perfect match. A physically fenced yard is required, and older kids are highly motivating for him--he does love children! If you want to be part of Hoss' life journey and in return get a fabulous companion, please start with an application.
