Chihuahua (medium coat) : : Male : : Adult : : Small Learn more about the Chihuahua.
We are told he was a stray—but all we really know for sure is that he needed us! Lest you think pet names are loosely chosen off the tops of our heads, we need to assure you that we give much thought and consideration to the names we choose for our dogs. Because this chunky little Chihuahua came in with what appears to be urine scald on his feet, we felt he had been kept somewhere very hot recently. We decided he needed a really great name reflecting his heritage, and went through a list of possibly 30 names with Spanish heritage. We settled on MATTEO, and he seems to like it! Matteo was treated to a bath immediately. We were sure glad he didn’t mind it too badly, and didn’t try to nip or bite even though he didn’t know either of us. He then spent a couple hours wandering around in the concrete play area reserved for puppies with no vaccines. It didn’t take long for the hot sun yesterday to dry him off. After a nice night of sleep and rest, today he was delivered to the vet in Altavista for a complete exam, nail trim, and recommendations. Best guess from this volunteer after sneaking a look at his teeth is that he is 5 to 6 years old. He will have a heartworm test today, and be vaccinated. He is definitely overweight, and most likely needs to lose about 40% of his bodyweight. We’re hoping for a foster to step up to foster him. Right now we’re just waiting to see what results we get back from the vet. We like to hold our dogs at least two weeks so we get a great idea of personality, and any little quirks they might have that will affect adoption. We are so excited to have the chance to snuggle and love on a tiny little boy again! It’s been a while. You are welcome to fill out an application to adopt, but please realize, it may be a couple weeks before we make a decision. Go to friendsofcampbellcounty.org
